Artist Bio and Statement

My art is an enigma … even to me. This fact is both an intended yet somehow unexpected result of effort which is motivated by three recurring and interactive forces. These are my passion for manipulating materials; my visceral reaction to the interiors of derelict objects; and, a continuing search for my own inner person through the act of art making. This combination provides both direction and surprise.

I like to capture images of the objective world through sketches and photos and then reclaim them in my studio as a “starter” for the painting. Through the physical labour of drawing, painting and scraping, guided sometimes by instinct and sometimes by rigorous plan, I seek unexpected discoveries. The dark, tactile surfaces perhaps suggest a sometimes melancholy, often hopeful, but always ambiguous vision. A vision replete with tension between paint and form; intuition and rationality; growth and decay.

And after all, such tensions reflect the reality of a physical and psychological world which is always changing, enduring, and in turn rejuvenating through inner constancy and peripheral flux.
