Artist Bio and Statement
Anne Hansen was raised by birdwatching parents, so it is no surprise that she has a crush on the oystercatcher, a striking shorebird species that inhabits rocky north Pacific shores. Before moving to Victoria four years ago, she was an administrative assistant at the University of Toronto for several years.
Anne’s My Body of Oystercatchers now numbers over 250 canvases. Accompanied by her camera and bike, she frequents the local coast to capture images that guide her art. She is also a knitter, urban bicyclist, gardener, and lover of vegan cuisine. Her art often accompanies her to protests at the BC legislature.
“I can barely keep pace with the inspiration derived from my oystercatchers and their environment -- the flowy seaweed in greens, browns and pinks, the pewter mountains, ultramarine ocean, lush foggy forests and log-strewn beaches,” she says.
